01 Sep Senior Dental Health FAQs: Aging and Oral Health
Koch Aesthetic Dentistry is here to help!
Aging gracefully is a wonderful journey that brings with it incomparable wisdom and insight. As we navigate the golden years, it’s crucial to pay attention to our overall health, including the unique dental needs that arise with aging. Given the effects our lifestyle can have on our oral health, senior adults can face many oral health challenges that have compounded over the years.
Seniors are at a unique stage in life that requires specialized dental care, needing trusted dental expertise to maintain their healthy and beautiful smiles. Koch Aesthetic Dentistry recognizes these distinct dental needs of seniors and offers tailored solutions to ensure they not only enjoy optimal oral health and confidence in their smiles but also for them to relish their golden years better.
What are Common Dental Problems for Older Adults?
Like many other aspects of our health, advancing age can introduce a range of oral health issues that affect seniors’ overall quality of life. Some of these challenges include:
Root Decay
Gum recession can expose the roots of our teeth to decay-causing acids. Unlike the crown of the tooth, roots lack enamel protection, making them more susceptible to decay.
Gum Disease
Often exacerbated by factors such as plaque buildup, inadequate dental hygiene, smoking or tobacco use, ill-fitting dental appliances, poor diets, and certain medical conditions like anemia, cancer, and diabetes, gum disease remains a top concern among older adults as it can also lead to tooth loss if left untreated.
Tooth Loss
When seniors get gum disease, it can cause tooth loss in seniors. As teeth are lost, the jawbone may become uneven due to the shifting of remaining teeth to fill the open spaces.
Darkened Teeth
Over time, teeth can naturally darken due to changes in dentin, the bone-like tissue under the enamel, another vital tissue that makes up the tooth. As well, a lifetime of consuming stain-causing foods and drinks can contribute to this issue. Thinning enamel may also allow the darker dentin to become more visible. Addressing darkened teeth is crucial, as they may indicate underlying dental problems.
Diminished Sense of Taste
Similar to our teeth darkening, age-related changes can also impair the sense of taste, but diseases, medications, and dentures can also contribute to sensory loss.
Dry Mouth
Reduced saliva flow is a common issue among seniors, stemming from factors such as cancer treatments involving radiation to the head and neck; and certain diseases like Sjögren’s syndrome, a chronic autoimmune disorder that occurs when the immune system attacks the glands that make moisture in the eyes, mouth, and other body parts; and medication side effects. Many medications can lead to dry mouth, which can be uncomfortable and harmful to oral health.
Denture-Related Problems
Factors such as ill-fitting dentures, poor dental hygiene, or the buildup of the naturally occurring fungus Candida albicans can lead to stomatitis, an inflammation of the tissue beneath a denture. Along with these, diseases or medications that affect the immune system may result in thrush or oral yeast infection, characterized by the overgrowth of Candida albicans in the mouth.
That said, it’s essential to recognize that while age is a factor in oral health, it is not the sole determinant. Certain medical conditions, such as arthritis in the hands and fingers, may hinder proper brushing and flossing, while medications can affect oral health and entail adjustments to dental treatments.
What are Tips for Effective Senior Oral Hygiene?
Seniors must prioritize the maintenance of good oral hygiene to preserve their natural teeth and overall dental health. Some of the best practices they can follow are:
- Brushing (at least) twice a day: Brushing your teeth regularly with fluoride toothpaste helps remove plaque and prevent tooth decay.
- Flossing at least once a day: It’s crucial to floss at least once a day to clean areas in between teeth since brushing alone may not help with tartar buildup.
- Rinsing with an antiseptic mouthwash: Mouthwash can help reduce the bacteria partially responsible for plaque, gum, and some heart disease.
- Along the same line, antibacterial mouth rinses, especially those endorsed by the American Dental Association, can effectively reduce bacteria linked to plaque and gum disease.
- Regular dental check-ups: Consistent consultations with trusted dental professionals are essential for professional cleaning, comprehensive exams, and early intervention to address emerging dental issues.
What is a Dental Checkup?
Your smile remains a valuable asset regardless of age, and maintaining excellent dental health, especially throughout the golden years, is paramount. You can be sure that Dr. Koch and his team are committed to addressing the unique dental needs of seniors and providing transformative solutions, including dental implants, to ensure that seniors continue to enjoy their radiant smiles throughout their golden years.
Looking Into Your Dental History
Before anything else, Dr. Koch will inquire about your dental history, including the approximate date of your last dental visit, the reason for your visit, and any other recent oral changes, loose or sensitive teeth, taste alterations, pain or discomfort, bleeding or sores in the mouth, and the presence of any lumps, bumps, or swellings.
If you’re having trouble remembering all these details, it may be helpful to keep a journal to track and relay all the relevant information during your visit.
Oral Examination
After this, Dr. Koch will conduct a thorough oral examination with various aspects.
This examination covers the following:
- Checking face and neck for discoloration, moles, and sores;
- Examining bite alignment to identify any problems in how the teeth come together while opening and closing the mouth;
- Assessment of the jaw for signs of clicking and popping in the temporomandibular joint;
- Evaluation of lymph nodes and salivary glands for any signs of swelling or lumps;
- Examination of inner cheeks for infections, ulcers, or traumatic injuries;
- Scrutiny of the tongue and other interior surfaces, including the floor of the mouth, soft and hard palate, and gum tissue, to detect signs of infection or oral cancer; and
- A thorough assessment of the teeth to identify decay, assess the condition of fillings, and check for cracks.
For seniors with dentures or other dental appliances, Dr. Koch will ask you about details like when these appliances are worn and removed, examine the areas in the mouth where the contraption makes contact for irritation or problems, and assess the appliance itself for wear or damage.
Do I Need Dentures?
The Role of Dental Implants in Senior Dental Health
While addressing the special oral health needs of seniors, dental implants emerge as a transformative solution. Our team at Koch Aesthetic Dentistry offers dental implant procedures that can transform seniors’ smiles. Essentially, the process entails the following steps:
Smile Analysis
Dr. Koch employs cutting-edge technology to assess the patient’s existing dental health. Based on the analysis, he provides a personalized treatment plan designed to help seniors achieve a beautifully restored smile.
Implant Placement
During the next appointment, Dr. Koch may extract indicated teeth as per the treatment plan. Depending on the condition of the surrounding soft tissue and bone, he inserts the dental implant and fits the patient with a temporary bridge. Implants require approximately six months to heal fully.
During this period, Dr. Koch crafts the permanent crowns, which he will later place over the implants. These crowns provide patients with replacement teeth that look, feel, and function just like their natural teeth.
In addition to the traditional dental implant method, Dr. Koch offers a streamlined alternative known as Teeth-in-an-Hour™. Leveraging virtual reality software during a CT scan, Dr. Koch can access precise blueprints of a patient’s teeth and construct the implant before performing the surgery. This innovative approach allows patients to leave the Birmingham office with a brand-new smile in just one hour!
